Catch-up contribution

Extra room Congress adds to contribution limits for older savers. In 2026: a 401(k) allows $8,000 extra at 50+, and a special $11,250 extra for ages 60–63 (it falls back to the 50+ amount at 64); an IRA allows $1,100 extra at 50+, for a total of $8,600. Catch-ups exist precisely because starting late is common — they are the law's own answer to 'am I too late?'

For your first $100: Under 50, this word is background. At 50 and 60, it moves real money — the age pages on this site put the exact extra room for your age on the first screen.
