Vesting

The schedule that says when your employer's contributions become fully yours. Your own contributions are always yours. Employer money may vest gradually — say, 20% a year — or all at once after a set number of years. If you leave the job early, the unvested part stays behind. Your plan's summary document prints your schedule.

For your first $100: Vesting does not change your first $100. It matters the day you think about changing jobs with a big employer balance on the table.
