High-deductible health plan (HDHP)

A health plan with lower monthly premiums and a higher deductible — you pay more of the early bills yourself. It is the plan type that unlocks an HSA. For 2026, an HDHP must have a deductible of at least $1,700 for self-only coverage ($3,400 family). It is a good deal only if the premium savings beat your likely extra costs — a health question first, a tax question second.

For your first $100: Do not pick a health plan for the HSA alone. Your first $100 of health money is your deductible cushion — the order keeps a cash step before this one for a reason.
