Contribution

Money you put into a retirement account. Contributions have years attached — an IRA contribution is designated for a specific tax year, and you generally have until the tax-filing deadline to make the prior year's. Your own contributions to a Roth IRA can be withdrawn without tax (the growth cannot, early) — a rule printed by the IRS, and one more reason the account types matter.

For your first $100: Your first $100 is a contribution the moment you label it for a year inside an IRA. Labels are the tax law's whole game — the account pages explain yours.
