Decoder · How growth works

Capital gain

The profit when you sell something for more than you paid. In a regular brokerage account, gains are taxed under printed rules (with lower rates for holdings kept over a year); inside retirement accounts, gains are sheltered as they happen and the tax story moves to contributions and withdrawals instead. Same growth, different tax plumbing — one more reason account type comes before fund choice.

For your first $100: Your first $100 has no gains yet. File the word away: it is why the account you choose this month echoes for decades.
